Welcome to Crested Lady Reptiles!

Origin: New Caledonia

Size: Depends on what type of leachie you own. R. leachianus leachianus (Grande Terre or "Mainland" type) animals can reach up to 13" SVL, while R. leachianus henkeli ("Offshore") are somewhat smaller and reach about 8" SVL.

Lifespan: About 30 years.

Housing:There are many options for housing your leachianus...

Juveniles should be housed in a smaller enclosure (10 gallons or less) to help them feel more secure. I like to use Sterlite containers with paper towel substrate, silk leaves, multiple hiding places, and a basking spot using Flex-Watt heat tape in the back. (Not TOO much warmth... don't cook your leachie!)

Glass aquariums or Kritter Keepers work fine as well. Other substrates you can use are newspaper, reptile carpet, or a naturalistic substrate. (Though I recommend using naturalistic substrates with caution.) Cork hollows, butter tubs, and other similar items make great hiding places.

As your gecko grows, so should it's enclosure. My older sub-adult leachies are housed in large Sterilite containers with butter tub hiding places (sphagnum moss inside), bamboo climbing "logs", silk leaves, basking area, and paper towel substrate.

Feeding: My leachies are fed an alternating diet of liquid diet, pinkies, and Super Mixture. Very few juvenile leachies will also eat crickets or roaches. For those that do, the crickets are dusted with calcium by placing them in a bag, adding Rep-Cal, and shaking them until they have a light calcium coating. Be careful not to oversupplement.

Pinkies are fed once a week or once every other week. Right now I feed frozen/thawed pinkies, though live can also be fed. If a leachie is new to eating pinkies, sometimes you can get them to accept it by "braining" it. Puncture a hole in the pinky's head until you get some "brain juice". Rub a little on your gecko's snout and they'll most likely snap it right up. (Kind of gross, but effective.)

If your juvenile leachie accepts insects, the length should be no larger than the width of your gecko's head to prevent choking. Be sure that the crickets/roaches have been properly gut-loaded before feeding to increase the nutritional content. Commercial cricket food is available at local pet stores, or you can feed them fresh fruits and vegetables from your house.

"Super Mixture" is a tasty treat I sometimes like to spoil my leachies with... not often, but every now and again.

"Super Mixture" Receipe:

2 bananas
1 mango
3 med. apricots
2 peaches
5-7 strawberries (I only use the inside of the strawberry, the seeds are cut off.)
low-fat plain yogurt
1 jar chicken baby food

Blend everything together and...voila! Super Mixture is born. This receipe was given to me by a friend, and I have to say that it's worked out great. I changed it a little, but the leachies love it! Every one of them lick their dish clean when they get this stuff. Keep in mind that the receipe can be reduced and it's not set in stone, you can add another peach, take away a banana, etc. Prepared like this, it lasts me a while, and I have a lot of geckos. Sometimes I'll also add a little Herptivite or Rep-Cal.

There is also a diet made by Sandfire Dragon Ranch called "Leachianus Gecko Diet". This is a meal replacement powder (MRP) that once your geckos eat it, you don't need to give them anything else, it has all the vitamins and supplements included. You can switch your geckos over to it by mixing it in with baby food and slowly increasing the diet until they're eating it exclusively. I tried it and didn't have much luck, but others have.

Breeding: We are new to breeding leachianus and will complete this section once we've got it down. ;-)

Other: You'll be amazed at the noises these geckos can make! Chirps, squaks, growls, barks, whistles... these guys have quite the vocabulary.
